Cannon\u2019s vision for a creative arts center in Aroostook County took shape when the Wintergreen Arts Center first opened its doors at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aroostookcentre.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.aroostookcentre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Aroostook Centre Mall<\/strong><\/a> in Presque isle.\u00a0 As a founding member, president and executive director, the young mother of three poured her artistic soul into leading Wintergreen\u2019s countless volunteers to create an outstanding regional attraction for the arts.\u00a0The center quickly drew hundreds of people of all ages\u2014children, teens and adults\u2014through its offerings of art classes, performances, and popular seasonal events.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Under-the-Sea-Audience.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Under-the-Sea-Audience-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"Under the Sea, Audience\" labor of love grew wings and landed in the middle of Presque Isle\u2019s downtown revitalization efforts in 2008, when two Wintergreen supporters, Tony Burgess and Glenn Capp, purchased the historic Wight Furniture Building and offered Wintergreen a 10-year lease.&nbsp;Through amazing community support and a successful capital campaign, renovation soon began and the Wintergreen Arts Center opened its doors at 149 State Street in early 2010.&nbsp;A year later, Lara was recognized for her efforts and dedication by being named \u201cCitizen of the Year\u201d by her adopted Presque Isle\u2019s Chamber of Commerce shortly before she and her family moved to the Portland, Oregon, area where she became a graduate student in art therapy at Marylhurst University.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Art-with-HeART-Volunteers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Meeting Community Needs<\/strong><br>Since 2010, Wintergreen has evolved and expanded its programming for students of all ages including a creative endeavor developed in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/presqueislemaine.gov\/departments\/recreation___parks\/index.php\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/presqueislemaine.gov\/departments\/recreation___parks\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Presque Isle Parks and Recreation Department<\/strong><\/a> to provide accessible, high quality and affordable after school and summer art programs for students from grades one through eight.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Wintergreen increased efforts to make arts programming more available to public hoursing residents by partnering with the Presque Isle Housing Authority (PIHA) to create <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/art-with-heart\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/art-with-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ART with HeART<\/a><\/strong>, a unique summer arts program which pairs teenage mentors with young children to create relationship-enriching experiences.&nbsp; ART with HeART is held in PIHA neighborhoods and is free to PIHA residents.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Building upon three years of success, Wintergreen launched a second Art with HeART program in 2020.&nbsp; This program is funded by individual donors and free to local area children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our traditional tuition-based summer arts camps and classes take place at Wintergreen and the Sargent Family Community Center with scholarships available.&nbsp; <em><strong>No child is turned away due to inability to pay.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Class-of-2020-2021_Thumbnail.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" Wintergreen responded to local needs for early childhood education by opening <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/creative-preschool\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/creative-preschool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Under the Willow Tree<\/a><\/strong>, a creative preschool for children ages 3-to-5-years old.&nbsp; We currently offer one class for 16 students with two teachers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, with the help of a $25,000 technology grant from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmgins.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.mmgins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MMG Insurance<\/a>, Wintergreen launched a digital arts program.&nbsp; Our students were soon having fun creating videos and learning graphic design, but the larger goal of our collaboration with MMG is to promote technological literacy by offering fun technology-based, creative programming that leads to positive self-expression and life-long learning.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ag-Video-Thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4933\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ag-Video-Thumbnail.jpg 320w, http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Ag-Video-Thumbnail-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Owning laptops and design software quickly opened doors for other opportunities as well.&nbsp; In 2019, Wintergreen was chosen by the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance to be one of three arts centers in Maine to partner in their <strong>AR Girls<\/strong> project, a two-year commitment free to girls ages 12-16.&nbsp; The AR Girls project is the first of its kind in the nation amined at increasing participation of girls in STEM careers by empowering them to design Augmented Reality (AR) games to communicate topics that are important to them and their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In 2021, Wintergreen <strong>Summer Arts<\/strong> students produced a video project funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainecf.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.mainecf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maine Community Foundation<\/a> about the importance of agriculture to our local economy. The video, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VmrBEr8VmwQ\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VmrBEr8VmwQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Farming in Aroostook County<\/a><\/strong>, struck a cord. Students and the community wanted more.
