Tony &amp; Olivier Award nominee <strong>Moritz Von Stuelpnagel <\/strong>(<em>Hand To God<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Present Laughter<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Bernhardt\/Hamlet<\/em>) will direct. All proceeds will benefit the <strong>Wintergreen Arts Center<\/strong>, in Cariani\u2019s hometown of Presque Isle, Maine, which offers arts programs to children and adults in rural northern Maine.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>The evening will take place on Monday, October 1st at 7:30pm at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at the Pershing Square Signature Center, 480 West 42nd Street.<\/p>\n<p>Shalhoub and Lenk will be joined by <strong>Bill Army<\/strong>, <strong>Layan Elwazani<\/strong>, <strong>Adam Kantor<\/strong>, <strong>Pomme Koch<\/strong>, <strong>Andrew Polk<\/strong>, <strong>Rachel Prather<\/strong>, <strong>Ahmad Maksoud<\/strong>, <strong>James Rana<\/strong>, <strong>Jonathan Raviv<\/strong>, <strong>Sharone Sayegh<\/strong> and <strong>Kristen Sieh<\/strong>.\u00a0<em>The Band Visits Cariani<\/em>\u00a0is produced by Pomme Koch and Sharone Sayegh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m overjoyed to be reunited with the cast of <em>The Band&#8217;s Visit<\/em>, even for just one night,\u201d says <strong>Tony Shalhoub<\/strong>. \u201cAnd I can&#8217;t think of a better reason than to celebrate the work of John Cariani. Not unlike <em>The Band&#8217;s Visit<\/em>, John&#8217;s plays speak both to the present moment and the greater human condition\u2014and they give voice to some people who are overlooked and aren\u2019t very well represented in contemporary American art and culture&#8230;oh, and they&#8217;re also really funny.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the connection between his plays and\u00a0<em>The Band\u2019s Visit<\/em>, John Cariani says, \u201c<em>The Band\u2019s Visit <\/em>\u00a0is about love and loss and kindness and hope in a fictional town in the middle of nowhere in Israel. A lot of my plays are about love and loss and kindness and hope in a fictional town in the middle of nowhere in northern Maine. I\u2019m intrigued by the intersection of these two make-believe worlds. And I\u2019m excited to see the actors who appear in <em>The Band\u2019s Visit <\/em>every night tackle scenes from my plays\u2014and raise some money for a good cause while they\u2019re at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Band Visits Cariani<\/em><\/strong> will feature scenes from four of Cariani\u2019s plays, including the widely produced <em>Almost, Maine<\/em>, which explores love and loss among working class people in rural northern Maine. <em>Almost, Maine <\/em>has become one of the most popular plays in the United States with nearly 4000 productions to date. It recently unseated Shakespeare\u2019s <em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream <\/em>as the most frequently produced play in North American high schools. He made his Broadway debut in the 2004 revival of\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0and received an\u00a0Outer Critics Circle Award and a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Motel the Tailor. He originated the role of Nigel Bottom in the current Broadway hit,\u00a0<em>Something Rotten!<\/em>\u00a0and received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for his performance. He is currently appearing as Itzik in\u00a0<em>The Band\u2019s Visit<\/em>, winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Musical. Most people know John from his roles on NBC\u2019s long-running drama, \u201cLaw &amp; Order,\u201d on which he played Forensics Tech Beck for five seasons. He also had recurring roles on CBS\u2019 \u201cNumbers\u201d and on IFC\u2019s \u201cThe Onion News Network.\u201d As a playwright, he is best known for his first play,\u00a0<em>Almost, Maine<\/em>, which premiered at Portland Stage Company in 2004 and became the most successful play in the company\u2019s history.\u00a0<em>Almost, Maine\u00a0<\/em>opened Off-Broadway in 2006 and has since become one of the most popular plays in the United States with nearly 4000 productions to date. It is currently the most frequently produced play in North American high schools topping perennial favorites\u00a0<em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>,\u00a0<em>You Can\u2019t Take It with You<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Our Town<\/em>. It has also received over twenty international productions\u00a0and has been translated into over a dozen languages. In New York he has performed in productions and workshops for The Public Theater, Lincoln Center Educational, and The National Alliance for Musical Theatre. He has worked regionally with A.C.T., Theatre Calgary, The O\u2019Neill Center, Marin Theatre Company, Theater J, San Francisco Playhouse, Round House Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Folger Theatre, and Studio Theatre.
