PRESQUE ISLE, Maine<\/strong>\u2014The Maine Mathematics and Science\nAlliance (MMSA) and Wintergreen Arts Center are embarking on a new partnership\nto bring arts-based computer science to Aroostook County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AR Girls\nproject is the first of its kind in the nation aimed at increasing the\nparticipation of girls in STEM careers by empowering them to design Augmented\nReality (AR) to communicate topics that are important to them and their\ncommunity.  AR Girls is a project of the\nMaine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) and funded by the National\nScience Foundation\u2019s Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers\n(ITEST) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Augmented\nReality is a contemporary mode of interactive storytelling in which a computer\nor mobile device is employed to blend real-life and digital content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AR Girls is\na summer-to-fall hands-on design experience for teen girls to explore and\ncommunicate with digital interactive art and design.  The AR Girls program is fun and free, and no\nprior experience with digital interactive art or design is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are\nexcited to work with the Wintergreen Arts Center,\u201d said Ruth Kermish-Allen,\nPhD, executive director of MMSA.  \u201cWe had\nan outstanding experience piloting the AR Girls program last summer with\nWaterfall Arts in Belfast, and look forward to growing the program with\nWintergreen in Aroostook County.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MMSA\nprovides a two-year commitment of support to assist Wintergreen in brining AR\nGirls into its programming portfolio including a staff committed to integrating\nAR Girls into Wintergreen\u2019s programming, trainings for local arts educators to\nsustainably lead AR Girls for years to come, direct support during activities,\nand technical logistics.  Wintergreen is\nalso awarded a stipend of $4,000 and $10,000 for the first and second\nconsecutive years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is an\namazing opportunity for Wintergreen,\u201d said Dottie Hutchins, Wintergreen\u2019s\nexecutive director.  \u201cBeing a partner in\nthe AR Girls program provides us with the high-quality support and direction we\nneed to take the next step in the digital arts initiative we launched last year\nwith MMG Insurance\u2019s technology grant. \nThe timing is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
