{"id":2245,"date":"2019-10-03T17:17:50","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T17:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/?p=2245"},"modified":"2019-10-03T17:17:55","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T17:17:55","slug":"wintergreen-to-host-ar-girls-community-showcase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wintergreen-to-host-ar-girls-community-showcase\/","title":{"rendered":"Wintergreen to host AR Girls Community Showcase"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019_AR-Girls-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2246\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019_AR-Girls-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019_AR-Girls-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019_AR-Girls-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019_AR-Girls.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PRESQUE ISLE, Maine<\/strong>\u2014Local\nteenage girls who are participating in the AR Girls program, a digital\ninteractive art, design, and storytelling initiative spearheaded by the Maine\nMathematics &amp; Science Alliance (MMSA), will present a Community Showcase at\nthe Wintergreen Arts Center on Saturday, October 12, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AR Girls Community Showcase is an opportunity for the\ngirls to demonstrate the results of their efforts over the summer and fall to\ncreate digital games for the purpose of interactive storytelling experiences. &nbsp;Members of the public will be able to download\na software application on their smartphones or devices and play along with the\ngirls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July, the girls worked with two community partners, Trena\nSoucy, a scientist and biology instructor at the Northern Maine Community\nCollege, and Kim Smith, resource development and public information officer for\nthe City of Presque Isle, who served as experts and mentors for the girls.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, the girls and their community partners, focused on\nhealthy lifestyle choices, an issue important to Aroostook County.&nbsp; Working in teams, the AR Girls used ARIS\ntechnology to design unique games integrating digital art components for the\nuser to experience and learn from at various stops on real-time tours in the\ndowntown Presque Isle area.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AR Girls project is the first of its kind in the nation\naimed at increasing the participation of girls in STEM careers by empowering\nthem to design Augmented Reality (AR) to communicate topics that are important\nto them and their community.&nbsp; AR Girls is\na collaboration of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA),\nUniversity of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), Oregon State\nUniversity, University of Wisconsin:&nbsp;\nMadison, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and funded by the\nNational Science Foundation\u2019s Innovative Technology Experiences for Students\nand Teachers (ITEST) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Augmented Reality is a contemporary mode of interactive\nstorytelling in which a computer or mobile device is employed to blend\nreal-life and digital content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AR Girls Community Showcase is free and open to the\npublic.
