{"id":3308,"date":"2022-05-23T16:43:04","date_gmt":"2022-05-23T16:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/?p=3308"},"modified":"2022-05-23T16:43:07","modified_gmt":"2022-05-23T16:43:07","slug":"wintergreen-receives-grant-to-create-wknn-wintergreen-kids-news-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wintergreen-receives-grant-to-create-wknn-wintergreen-kids-news-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Wintergreen receives grant to create WKNN:  Wintergreen Kids News Network"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Camryn-Smith-Farming-in-Aroostook-County.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Camryn-Smith-Farming-in-Aroostook-County.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Camryn-Smith-Farming-in-Aroostook-County.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.wintergreenarts.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Camryn-Smith-Farming-in-Aroostook-County-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Six-year-old <strong>Camryn Smith<\/strong>, a seventh-generation member of Smith&#8217;s Farm in Presque Isle, is interviewed by Wintergreen&#8217;s video production students for their 2021 digital storytelling project, <strong><em>Farming in Aroostook County<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PRESQUE ISLE, Maine<\/strong>\u2014Maine Community Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the Wintergreen Arts Center to create Wintergreen Kids News Network (WKNN), a digital storytelling project to broadcast real news by real kids about things happening across Aroostook County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant is made in part from the Aroostook County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation at the recommendation of the Aroostook County Committee advisors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe creation of WKNN builds upon work our video production students and their teacher, Shaye McHatten, completed last summer about the importance of agriculture to our local economy,\u201d said Dottie Hutchins, Wintergreen\u2019s executive director. \u201cTheir video, <strong><em>Farming in Aroostook County<\/em><\/strong>, was also funded in part by the Maine Community Foundation and is found on Wintergreen\u2019s YouTube channel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VmrBEr8VmwQ&amp;t=4s\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VmrBEr8VmwQ&amp;t=4s<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of WKNN is for students to create a kids news organization to produce digital storytelling projects that strengthen both the knowledge and perception of Aroostook County as a vibrant, important, beautiful place to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe public\u2019s response to <strong><em>Farming in Aroostook County<\/em><\/strong> was amazing,\u201d said Hutchins. \u201cIt gave our students the inspiration to make it into a year around project to create more video clips about the people and places around them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wintergreen students will kick off the WKNN project this summer by creating branding graphics, a WKNN YouTube channel, website page, and a student editorial board to direct the project mission and content.
