During the month of May, the Wintergreen Arts Center participated in \u201cMay is Mental Health Month\u201d with a show celebrating the life and art of Alan Mountain (1956\u20132015), a local artist who lived his entire adult life with a disabling mental illness. The show touched hundreds of people and through the generosity of Alan\u2019s family, an auction of his artwork and the sale of a book he helped to write, brought in $2,574.00, with all proceeds divided equally between Wintergreen and Catholic Charities.\"514b6368-a96d-4af1-baf1-5f3796392b9c\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Alan\u2019s mother, Alice Bolstridge said, \u201cWith this donation, the family thanks these organizations for the important role they play in contributing to community mental health. I cannot overemphasize the therapeutic significance of artistic expression in Alan\u2019s life. And Catholic Charities\u2019 mental health services provided for Alan\u2019s needs in a variety of ways for most of his adult life: basic survival needs of housing, food, housekeeping services, and supplies he obtained in their \u2018free\u2019 store; that he often used in surprising ways in his art.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dottie Hutchins, Wintergreen\u2019s executive director, said, \u201cOn May 6<\/span>, we held a reception during the First Friday<\/span> Art Walk which drew a crowd of over 125 people including several members of Alan\u2019s family.\u00a0 Alice gave a moving and candid talk about Alan, the importance of art in his life, and his illness. Her bravery is equaled only by her generosity.\u00a0 The family\u2019s gifts\u2014both financial and groundbreaking\u2014are extremely appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dixie Shaw, director of hunger and relief services at Catholic Charities Maine, said, \u201cCatholic Charities is so thrilled to have this support from the family of Alan Mountain.\u00a0 This will go far to provide services for those in Aroostook County struggling with mental illness.\u201d\u00a0 If people would like more information about the services Catholic Charities provides in Maine, visit www.ccmaine.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n
